Michigan Tech Women’s Tennis Sweeps Final Home Weekend, Men’s Team Falls Short
The Michigan Tech Huskies women’s tennis team had a successful final home weekend, sweeping both Davenport and Purdue Northwest at Gates Tennis Center in Houghton. The women’s team defeated Davenport 5-2 on Friday and Purdue Northwest 4-3 on Saturday, while the men’s team faced tough competition with losses to both opponents.
Coach Kristin D’Agostini-Yep praised the women’s team for stepping up when it mattered most, knowing that their postseason hopes were on the line. Standout performances came from Emily Cojocaru and Chiara Heinz, who both went undefeated over the weekend. Cojocaru, paired with Caoimhe McDonnell, won both of their doubles matches and secured victories in singles as well. Heinz also dominated in both doubles and singles play.
On the men’s side, Vitor Jordao and Nikolai Prosjanykov stood out with undefeated performances in doubles. Despite tough losses, the men’s team is looking ahead to finish conference play strong in the upcoming weekend.
The Huskies also honored their seniors, including Artem Sharkota, Eli Pinnoo, and Marina Fernandez, who had a standout performance on her Senior Day.
With the regular season wrapping up, both the women’s and men’s teams will face Ferris State and Grand Valley State in their final matches. The women’s team currently holds a 4-13 overall record and a 2-3 record in the GLIAC, while the men’s team is 3-14 overall and 0-4 in the GLIAC.
Fans can look forward to exciting matchups as the Huskies aim to finish the season on a high note and carry that momentum into the postseason.
