Laney’s Yusuke Sugawara Making Waves as No. 1 Singles Player for Buccaneers

Laney High School’s Yusuke Sugawara is making waves on the tennis court this spring, despite his relatively short time playing the sport. The junior, who splits his time between Wilmington and Japan, has quickly risen to the top spot on the Buccaneers’ roster.

Born in Wilmington to Japanese parents, Sugawara has always had a unique perspective on high school life, spending his summers attending school in Japan to experience a different culture. This exposure has shaped his approach to sports, academics, and life in general.

While Laney’s tennis team has faced some early-season struggles, Sugawara has been a standout player for coach Adam King. Known for his competitive spirit and sense of humor, Sugawara brings a fresh perspective to the court as he continues to improve and learn the game.
