Sumit Nagal Qualifies for Monte Carlo Masters, Makes History for India
Sumit Nagal’s remarkable journey continued as he secured a spot in the main draw of the Monte Carlo Masters after a thrilling victory over Facundo Diaz Acosta in the final round of qualifiers. The Indian tennis star displayed immense resilience as he fought back from a 2-5 deficit in the opening set to eventually triumph with a scoreline of 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.
Nagal’s victory marked a historic moment for Indian tennis, as he became the first player in 42 years to progress to the main draw of the prestigious Monte Carlo Masters. The last Indian player to achieve this feat was Ramesh Krishnan back in 1982, although he was unable to advance past the first round.
The 26-year-old has been on a dream run in 2024, starting with his impressive performance at the Australian Open where he stunned the 31st-seeded player in the opening round. Nagal also claimed the Chennai Open ATP Challenger title, leading to his debut in the Top 100 of the ATP Rankings.
Despite a recent loss in the men’s singles pre-quarterfinals of the Marrakech Open, Nagal has continued to showcase his talent and determination on the court. With his career-best ranking of 95, he is poised to make a strong impact at the Monte Carlo Masters.
In addition to Nagal, the world’s number one doubles pair of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden are also competing at the tournament. The duo, who secured the men’s doubles title at the Australian Open, will look to continue their impressive form on the clay courts of Monte Carlo.
As the action unfolds at the Monte Carlo Masters, all eyes will be on Sumit Nagal as he aims to make a mark on the international tennis stage and potentially go beyond the first round in this prestigious tournament.
