Tennis Player Overcomes Tragedy to Excel at ODU
The Old Dominion women’s tennis team was dealt a heartbreaking blow as freshman player Alexandra Viktorovitch received devastating news just before a road trip to Iowa City. Her father, Igor, had passed away suddenly at the age of 57 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Despite the immense grief and pain, Alex made the courageous decision to continue playing tennis just two days after her father’s passing. She found solace and motivation in honoring her father’s memory and making him proud.
Five years later, Alex has excelled both on and off the court at ODU. She played a key role in leading the team to its fourth consecutive conference title and was named First Team All-Sun Belt Conference. Additionally, she has maintained academic excellence, earning an undergraduate degree in business management and pursuing an MBA.
As the team prepares for the NCAA Tournament, Alex reflects on her journey and the unwavering support she has received from her teammates and coaches. She credits her resilience to her father’s influence and the lessons he instilled in her.
Despite the challenges she has faced, Alex remains determined to succeed and carry on her father’s legacy. She continues to push herself to new heights, both in tennis and in life, with the hope of one day reuniting with her beloved father.
As she looks ahead to the future, Alex remains grateful for the opportunities and support she has received at ODU. Her strength, determination, and unwavering dedication serve as an inspiration to her teammates and all who know her story.
