K-State Women’s Tennis Team Clinches Victory Over West Virginia
The K-State women’s tennis team continues to dominate on the court, securing a thrilling 4-3 victory over West Virginia in a nail-biting match at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium on Saturday. Sophomore Vanesa Suarez emerged as the hero of the day, clinching the deciding match and leading the Wildcats to their second consecutive conference win.
Head coach Jordan Smith expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “Honestly, it was just a great weekend for us. We knew that was gonna be two hard matches, because they’re gonna come with everything they had, which they did, Cincinnati and West Virginia. So that gets us back on track.”
The Wildcats got off to a strong start by winning the doubles point for the second consecutive match, setting the tone for the rest of the day. Manhattan High standout Jillian Harkin and senior Manami Ukita secured a victory in the No. 3 spot, while freshman Maralgoo Chogsomjav and sophomore Maria Santos won a crucial tiebreaker in the No. 2 position.
In singles play, freshman Charlotte Keitel and Chogsomjav continued their impressive form, winning their matches in straight sets. However, it was Suarez who stole the show with a hard-fought three-set victory over Love-Star Alexis in the No. 1 position, marking her first singles win since March.
Despite some tough losses in singles play, the Wildcats showed resilience and determination to come out on top against a tough West Virginia team. With this win, K-State improves to 9-9 overall and 3-7 in the Big 12 conference.
Next up, the Wildcats will hit the road to face UCF and Houston, looking to extend their winning streak and build on their recent success. Fans can expect more thrilling matches and impressive performances from this talented K-State team.
