“Sports Club 88 in Norfolk seeks new members after decline due to Covid”

Sports Club 88 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, is calling for new members to join their over-50s sports group after experiencing a decline in membership since the Covid pandemic. The group, which offers activities such as table tennis, short tennis, and badminton at the Marina Centre, saw a decrease from 100 members and a waiting list before the pandemic to 70 or 80 members currently.

Organiser Sue Gill, 73, emphasized the importance of the group for the well-being of its members, regardless of their abilities. She mentioned that the group received a £10,000 lottery grant in 2023 to help subsidize fees for its members. Gill highlighted the social aspect of the club, mentioning a wedding that took place between two members who met on the courts.

Member Ray Howes, 78, shared how sports helped him through the grief of losing his wife, emphasizing the positive impact of being active and socializing with others. Howes credited his fitness and youthfulness to his active lifestyle, which includes participating in Sports Club 88, golf, and bowls.

Membership at Sports Club 88 costs £100 a year, equivalent to just £1 per session, with free parking available at the Marina Centre. The group welcomes individuals over 50 to join and enjoy the benefits of staying active, socializing, and improving their overall well-being.
