Former Professional Tennis Players Launch Primary Schools Modified Tennis Legacy Programme at Bloemendal Hub

Former professional tennis players from the northern areas of Gqeberha are leading the charge in introducing the sport to a new generation of pupils through the Primary Schools Modified Tennis Legacy Programme. The official launch of the Bloemendal hub at Astra Primary School marked a significant milestone in this initiative, which is a collaboration between the SA Tennis Development Foundation (SATDF) and Catiza Tennis Academy.

Clifton Swartz, a retired professional tennis player and director of the Catiza Academy of Tennis, emphasized the rich history of tennis in the region and the need for a structured approach to developing talent. He highlighted the achievements of past players from the area and outlined the program’s goal of introducing tennis to 42 primary schools in the northern areas.

Astra Primary School principal, Helma Boggenpoel, expressed her excitement about the initiative, recognizing the positive impact sports can have on children’s lives. She emphasized the importance of keeping children active and engaged in activities like tennis, which promote discipline and hard work.

Cliffie, as he is affectionately known, emphasized the role of sports in bridging racial and gender divides, highlighting the inclusive nature of sports where everyone can come together to play the game. The program includes clinics, training, and equipment for the participating schools, with a focus on fun, enjoyment, and basic technique development.

The launch of the Bloemendal hub represents a significant step towards introducing tennis to a new generation of players in the northern areas of Gqeberha. With the support of former professional players and dedicated educators like Helma Boggenpoel, the Primary Schools Modified Tennis Legacy Programme is set to make a lasting impact on the community and inspire a new wave of tennis enthusiasts.
