Daniil Medvedev’s outburst at Monte Carlo Masters, Rublev knocked out as other favourites advance
In a dramatic turn of events at the Monte Carlo Masters, Daniil Medvedev found himself in a heated exchange with the umpire during his match against Gael Monfils. The world number four was leading 6-2 1-2 when he became visibly frustrated with two calls on the baseline and shouted at the line judge.
Umpire Mohamed Lahyani had to intervene twice to calm down the Russian player, reminding him not to shout at the officials. Despite being 40-15 up in the game, Medvedev lost his serve and went 4-1 down before mounting a comeback to win five games in a row and secure victory against Monfils.
The disagreement started after a shot by Monfils was called out, but upon review, it was deemed to be in by the umpire. This decision further fueled Medvedev’s frustration, leading to a series of outbursts and arguments with the officials.
After the match, Medvedev expressed his frustration by writing “in or out?” on a TV camera lens, but ultimately shook hands with Lahyani. He will now face compatriot Karen Khachanov in the last 16.
In other matches, defending champion Andrey Rublev was knocked out by Alexei Popyrin, while second seed Jannik Sinner and 12th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to the next round. The tournament continues to deliver thrilling matches and unexpected outcomes as the top players battle it out on the clay courts of Monte Carlo.
