Mark Williams emerges as a challenger to Ronnie O’Sullivan at World Snooker Championship
Stephen Hendry, the seven-time world champion, has finally identified a player who he believes can challenge Ronnie O’Sullivan at this year’s World Snooker Championship. After O’Sullivan’s dominant performances this season, including winning five tournaments and reaching the final of the Tour Championship, many were left wondering who could potentially stop the Rocket.
Hendry, who was previously unable to name a player who could challenge O’Sullivan, now believes that Mark Williams is the man who can cause the defending champion big problems. Williams, a three-time World Champion, recently defeated O’Sullivan 10-5 in the final of the Tour Championship, winning the last seven frames in impressive fashion.
In an interview with Sportsboom, Hendry praised Williams’ aggressive style of play and his unique temperament, stating that no one else in the sport possesses the same qualities as the Welshman. He highlighted Williams’ recent victories over top players like Judd Trump and Mark Allen as evidence of his current form and confidence heading into the Crucible.
Hendry also admitted that his own career could have been extended if he had adopted a similar carefree attitude towards the sport like Williams. The Scot marveled at Williams’ ability to compete fiercely on the table while maintaining a relaxed demeanor off it.
With O’Sullivan aiming to win a record-breaking eighth World Championship and complete a historic triple crown sweep in one season, the stage is set for an exciting showdown between the Rocket and Williams at the Crucible. Snooker fans will be eagerly anticipating this potential clash of titans as the World Championship approaches.
