Luca Brecel reveals car drama nearly made him miss World Mixed Doubles final
Luca Brecel and Reanne Evans have emerged victorious in the World Mixed Doubles final, but their journey to the title was almost derailed by a bizarre incident involving Brecel’s car being towed.
The duo, who had impressed throughout the tournament, found themselves in a tight battle against Mark Selby and Rebecca Kenna in the final. After racing into an early lead, the match was level at 2-2, setting the stage for a tense finish.
However, Brecel and Evans managed to regain control of the match and ultimately secured a 4-2 victory to claim the combined £60,000 prize. For Evans, the win was particularly significant as it marked her first televised title in a career that has seen her dominate the women’s snooker scene with 12 world titles.
But the victory was almost overshadowed by Brecel’s car troubles. The reigning world champion revealed that his car was towed away after he parked in the wrong place, nearly causing him to miss the final.
“I had to go and get it just before the final and then just about made it back in time,” Brecel told ITV Sport. “Crazy story. But luckily, I made it in time.”
Despite the last-minute drama, Brecel and Evans put on a solid performance in the final, although both players admitted they were not entirely satisfied with their game.
“I started off well and played a bit better than before, but not as good as I would have liked,” Brecel said. “It was still good enough to win, but I’m still not happy with the way we played.”
For Evans, the win was a special moment after years of hard work and dedication to the sport.
“It’s fantastic to be lifting a trophy and play in a final like this alongside all these great players,” Evans said. “The crowd have been fantastic as well and I’ve really enjoyed myself.”
With the World Mixed Doubles title now under their belts, Brecel and Evans will be looking ahead to their next challenge in Sheffield with renewed confidence and determination.
