Mark Williams was seen holding back tears after his triumphant win against Ronnie O’Sullivan in the Tour Championship final. The 49-year-old Welshman, playing his first ranking final against O’Sullivan since 2000, managed to secure a 10-5 victory in the ‘Class of 92′ final in Manchester on Sunday night despite initially trailing 5-3.
O’Sullivan, known as The Rocket, praised the snooker legend after their clash as an emotional Williams, flanked by his three sons, responded to questions about his victory. Williams expressed his disbelief at winning and thanked the crowd for their support throughout the week.
In an interview with ITV, Williams reflected on his performance, saying, “I played well all day. I was 3-1 up, then I went 5-3 down. He played unbelievable. I thought, sometimes you’ve just got to hold your hands up and admit your opponent is too good.”
Despite his emotional victory, Williams remained humble, acknowledging the tough competition he faced throughout the tournament. He mentioned beating top players like Judd Trump, Mark Allen, and Ronnie O’Sullivan on his way to the title.
O’Sullivan, on the other hand, praised Williams for his consistency and talent, calling him the most talented snooker player he’s ever seen. The Rocket acknowledged Williams’ skill and dedication to the sport, stating that Williams would likely be No.1 in the world if he dedicated his whole life to snooker.
With the World Snooker Championship on the horizon, Williams is now considered a strong contender for the title. The event begins on April 20 at the Crucible in Sheffield, where Williams will look to continue his impressive form and potentially add another championship to his illustrious career.
