Mark Williams stuns Ronnie O’Sullivan with seven-frame comeback in Tour Championship final

Mark Williams produced a stunning comeback to defeat Ronnie O’Sullivan in the final of the Tour Championship in Manchester, reeling off seven frames in a row to secure a memorable victory.

The clash between the two snooker legends marked only the sixth time they had faced each other with a title on the line since 2005, and the first in a ranking event since 2000. At a combined age of 97, this was also the oldest ranking final of all time, highlighting the enduring quality of both players.

O’Sullivan, chasing his sixth title of an incredible season, looked set to claim victory after coming from 3-1 down to lead 5-3 with three century breaks. However, Williams had other ideas as he produced a scintillating display in the evening session, compiling five breaks of 50+ – including two centuries – to secure his 26th ranking title.

The Welshman’s path to victory included impressive wins over the likes of Judd Trump and Mark Allen, but it was his incredible break in the deciding frame of his opening match against Tom Ford that set the tone for his tournament triumph.

Reflecting on his victory, Williams expressed his surprise at still winning tournaments at the age of 49, while O’Sullivan praised his opponent’s consistency and talent, suggesting that Williams could be world number one if he dedicated himself to the game.

The thrilling final showcased the enduring quality of both players and sets the stage for an exciting World Championship, where both Williams and O’Sullivan will undoubtedly be among the favorites to lift the prestigious trophy.
