Mark Selby considers retirement after crashing out of World Snooker Championship
Mark Selby’s shocking defeat at the World Snooker Championship has left the four-time former champion contemplating retirement. The “pathetic” 10-6 loss to qualifier Joe O’Connor marked the end of a dismal season for Selby, who admitted that something needs to change if he is to continue playing next season.
Selby, who has struggled to find his form this season, expressed his disappointment after the defeat, stating, “It was pathetic from start to finish.” The defeat comes after Selby had previously questioned his future in the sport following a loss at the Tour Championship earlier this month.
On the other hand, O’Connor, who grew up idolizing Selby, held his nerve throughout the match and secured the biggest win of his career. Selby, who had won three previous championships, acknowledged that he will need help if he decides to continue playing, especially on the mental side of the game.
In other matches, Shaun Murphy managed to avoid a similar fate as Selby by securing a comfortable 10-5 win over Lyu Haotian. Murphy expressed his relief and delight at winning his first match in the competition since 2021.
Meanwhile, former champion Mark Williams edged ahead of Si Jiahui in a high-quality opening session, while Stuart Bingham pulled away from Gary Wilson to secure a 10-5 victory and a spot in the last 16.
The World Snooker Championship continues to deliver surprises and upsets, with Robert Milkins also facing a tough battle after finishing the opening session of his match against Pang Junxu 5-4 behind. The competition promises more thrilling matches and unexpected outcomes as it progresses.
