Luca Brecel suffers shock defeat in opening round of Cazoo World Snooker Championship
Luca Brecel of Belgium made history at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield by becoming the first player from his country to win the World Snooker Championship. However, his title defense came to an abrupt end on the opening day of the 2024 event as he suffered a shock deciding-frame loss to David Gilbert.
Brecel, the reigning world champion, had led 6-3 after the first session but missed crucial opportunities to close out the match. Gilbert, ranked 31st in the world, capitalized on Brecel’s mistakes and produced a match-winning break of 65 to secure a place in the next round.
The defeat for Brecel continued the so-called ‘Crucible Curse,’ as no first-time winner has been able to retain their title the following year. Despite holding a commanding lead in the match, Brecel was unable to maintain his advantage in the second session, allowing Gilbert to stage a comeback and ultimately eliminate the defending champion.
In other matches on the opening day, world number two Judd Trump took a 6-3 lead against Hossein Vafaei, while Ali Carter, Jak Jones, and Tom Ford also held leads in their respective matches.
The action at the Crucible Theatre promises to be thrilling as the world’s best snooker players battle it out for the prestigious title. With surprises and upsets already taking place, fans can expect more drama and excitement as the tournament progresses.
