Study Finds Noise from Spectator Boats at Sailing Regattas Could Harm Marine Life

The impact of noise pollution from motorised boats on marine life has been highlighted in a recent study conducted by researchers at Heriot-Watt University’s Institute of Life and Earth Sciences in Edinburgh. The study, published in Marine Pollution Bulletin, focused on the effects of noise from spectator boats during the 36th America’s Cup in New Zealand.

The research found that the noise from large groups of motorised boats was loud and sustained enough to cause stress and disrupt the natural habitats of marine mammals, fishes, and invertebrates. With thousands of sailing regattas taking place around the world each year, the researchers emphasized the need for greater efforts to limit the potential impacts of underwater noise on marine life.

During the America’s Cup event in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand, researchers collected and measured acoustic recordings around the racecourses. They found that sound levels increased several kilometers beyond the racecourse boundaries and remained high well beyond the duration of the races. On a typical race day, sound levels around the racecourse were five decibels higher than normal, indicating a significant increase in noise pollution.

To address these concerns, the researchers suggested various protection measures, such as restricting spectator vessel speeds and introducing designated areas for spectator boats. They also recommended using marine mammal detection platforms to identify when animals are nearby, so that best noise practices can be adopted.

Matt Pine, a marine scientist involved in the study, emphasized the importance of considering the potential impact of underwater noise pollution from spectator boats when planning sailing events, especially in ecologically significant areas. He highlighted the detrimental effects of noise pollution on marine species, including increased stress levels and disruptions to reproduction, foraging, and social interactions.

As the issue of noise pollution from motorised boats continues to threaten marine life, it is crucial for event organizers and participants to take proactive measures to minimize their impact on the environment.
