Navy Sailing Team Competes at MAISA Team Racing Championship
The Navy intercollegiate sailing team showcased their skills and determination at the MAISA Team Racing Championship this past weekend in Norfolk, Va. Despite facing challenging conditions and a controversial collision, the Midshipmen put on a strong performance that ultimately led to a second-place finish.
Saturday’s races started off with heavy winds, causing a delay in the competition. Once on the water, Navy dominated by winning seven out of their first eight races. However, a collision incident led to a deduction in their overall record, putting them at 10-1 going into Sunday.
Sunday brought lighter winds, but Navy continued their winning streak by securing victories in all of their races. With a final record of 12-1, the Midshipmen found themselves tied for first place with Georgetown. Unfortunately, Georgetown was declared the champion based on total points scored in the head-to-head races between the two teams.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Navy’s team consisting of talented sophomores and experienced seniors showcased their teamwork and skill on the water. The sailors, led by skippers Nathan Smith, Jack Welburn, and Henry Allgeier, demonstrated their competitive spirit and determination throughout the championship.
Looking ahead, Navy will have the opportunity to bounce back at the upcoming regattas in April. The team will be competing in the MAISA Women’s Team Race Championship, the Thompson Trophy Team Race, and the Truxtun Umsted, where they will aim to continue their success and strive for victory.
Overall, the Navy sailing team’s performance at the MAISA Team Racing Championship was a testament to their skill and resilience in the face of adversity. With their sights set on future competitions, the Midshipmen are determined to come back stronger and achieve even greater success on the water.
