Zach Stibbe: Following in His Mother’s Footsteps on the Sea

Zach Stibbe shares his mother’s love of the sea — but not her divided loyalties. The 18-year-old Dunedin-based sailor has just clinched victory at the ILCA 6 (Laser Radial) competition at the New Zealand Youth Championships in Auckland, earning himself a spot at the Sailing Youth World Championships in Italy.

Over four days of intense competition at Murrays Bay Sailing Club, Zach outshone more than a dozen of the country’s top sailors to secure his place on the world stage. His confidence and determination were evident as he spoke about his win, emphasizing the importance of self-belief and hard work.

Proud mother Jenny Armstrong, a decorated sailor herself, expressed her joy at Zach’s success, highlighting his dedication and perseverance in pursuing his passion for sailing. She commended his ability to stay composed under pressure, a crucial trait for any successful sailor.

Zach’s love for the sport is undeniable, with his mother noting his commitment to honing his skills and pushing himself to new heights. Despite being born in Australia, Zach’s loyalty lies firmly with New Zealand, a sentiment shared by his mother.

In addition to his sailing achievements, Zach is also making strides in his career as an apprentice builder, drawing parallels between his work on land and his adventures on the water. With the unwavering support of the Otago Yacht Club and his mentor, Zach is poised for even greater success in the future.

As Zach sets his sights on the Sailing Youth World Championships in Italy, his determination and passion for the sport are sure to propel him to new heights. With a supportive network behind him and a strong sense of national pride, Zach Stibbe is ready to make his mark on the international sailing scene.
