Trieste Hosts Melges 24 European Sailing Series for Fifth Consecutive Year
Trieste, a city with a rich sailing heritage and home to Italy’s largest Melges 24 fleet, is gearing up to host the Melges 24 European Sailing Series event for the fifth consecutive year. This prestigious event is a testament to Trieste’s status as a sailing hub and a favorite among sailors from around the world.
Mauro Bailo, Sports Director of the Yacht Club Adriaco, expressed his excitement in welcoming the Melges 24 fleet to Trieste, highlighting the city’s longstanding presence and excellence in one-design sailing. With the season opener and subsequent events set to take place from April to October, the competition will cover various countries including Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Norway, Denmark, and Italy.
A total of 26 teams have eagerly registered for the event, representing a diverse array of nations and showcasing the global appeal of the Melges 24 class. Among the entries are top European teams and long-time class loyalists, including Akos Csolto’s Chinook from Hungary, the reigning overall and Corinthian series winner.
Reigning European Champion Michele Paoletti will be sailing his Strambapapà with a unique crew, while the top representative of the Croatian fleet, Razjaren of Ante Cesic, is eager for more success after ranking 5th in the 2023 ESS ranking.
The competition promises to be fierce as the winners of the Trieste event will be determined by Sunday afternoon, after nine scheduled races over three days starting Friday at noon.
