Northern League Championship Trophy Up for Grabs at NorCal Divisional Championship
Marin high school sailors are gearing up for an exciting weekend of competition at the NorCal Divisional Championship, where a new trophy, the Northern League Championship Trophy, will be up for grabs. The event, hosted by the Peninsula Youth Sailing Foundation in Redwood City, will see teams from Redwood, San Domenico, and Tam high schools vying for the prestigious title.
With all 33 Northern California school teams registered with the Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Association eligible to compete, the stakes are high for the young sailors. The Northern League Championship Trophy, repurposed from an old trophy with deep Marin ties, will be awarded to the winning team, along with a foundation-sponsored trip to race in the Phoebe King Memorial Regatta in Annapolis.
San Rafael High coach Dan Brandt is thrilled about the new trophy, noting that it will inspire his young team to train harder and aim for success. The Redwood team, led by seniors Morgan Headington and Henry Vare, is focused on putting their best foot forward and aiming for victory in the regatta.
Headington and Vare, along with their teammates, have been working hard in practice, focusing on starts, team racing, and boat handling. With their eyes set on the ultimate prize, the team is determined to give their all and hopefully secure a win that will qualify them for the prestigious invitational event in Annapolis.
The support of the five foundations that back youth sailing in Northern California is also crucial, as they have offered grants to cover travel costs for the winning team. With so much on the line, the competition is sure to be fierce and the young sailors are ready to showcase their skills on the water.
