Sailing Takes Center Stage on Davis Islands with Youth Sailing Program
Davis Islands is known for its beautiful views and waterfront activities, but one sport in particular is gaining popularity among the youth in the area – sailing. The Davis Island Youth Sailing Foundation is making waves this summer as over 200 kids are set to learn the ropes of sailing.
Aisling Sullivan, a coach with the foundation, highlighted the impact of the program on the kids. “A lot of kids join with little experience, they start sailing in summer camp and they really enjoy it, they love being out on the water with their friends learning how to do new things,” she said.
The program not only teaches kids how to sail but also instills independence, confidence, discipline, and leadership skills. With the kids being in charge of their own boats and sails, they learn to adapt to changing conditions and work with nature.
The youth sailors come from all areas of Tampa Bay, providing them with the opportunity to make new friends and build camaraderie. For many of the kids, the freedom of sailing their own boat and the thrill of skidding over the water are what make the sport so enjoyable.
As the kids progress in their skills, they have the option to join the race team and compete nationally. Team racing is a favorite among the youth sailors, as they work together to beat other teams and push themselves to new limits.
Sullivan encourages parents to consider signing their kids up for sailing, as it can become a lifelong passion and sport for them. With a wide range of competitive options and the opportunity to travel to regattas all over Florida, the Davis Island Youth Sailing Foundation is setting sail for a bright future in the sport.
