Nantucket Sailing Team Prepares for Spring Season Under Coach Bruce Turner
The Nantucket High School sailing team is gearing up for another exciting season under the leadership of head coach Bruce Turner. With many familiar faces returning from last year’s crew, Turner is optimistic about the team’s prospects for the upcoming spring races.
“We have a strong core group of sailors returning this season, which is great to see,” Turner said. “Archie Ferguson is back from injury, and we have key members like Rory Murray and Alice O’Banion leading the way. We are in a good spot this year.”
The team will be facing off against league teams every Tuesday and Thursday, as well as competing in events organized by the New England Scholastic Sailing Association (NESSA). Turner emphasized the importance of non-league races in improving the team’s ranking and potentially qualifying for NESSA team racing events.
“We have set some ambitious goals for this season, but I believe they are achievable with the talent and dedication of our sailors,” Turner explained. “I am confident in the abilities of our team, and I am excited to see what we can accomplish together.”
In addition to regular season races, the Whalers will be hosting the Cape & Islands Girls Invitational at the end of May. Turner expressed gratitude for the support of Nantucket Community Sailing and Great Harbor Yacht Club as the team prepares for the upcoming challenges.
As the team eagerly anticipates their first regatta on April 2 against Barnstable, Turner is confident that his sailors are well-prepared for whatever conditions they may face on the water.
“We are ready for the season ahead, and I have no doubt that these kids will give it their all,” Turner said. “I am looking forward to seeing them in action and continuing to build on the success we have achieved so far.”
