Nigerian Navy Takes Corrective Steps to Improve Management of Sailing Club
The Nigerian Navy Sailing Club is undergoing a transformation, thanks to the efforts of Rear Admiral Mustapha Bala Hassan, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command. Admiral Hassan has taken corrective steps to address the issues plaguing the club, particularly in terms of dilapidating structures and negative practices affecting its management.
One of the key changes implemented by the Navy is the introduction of an annual fee for honorary members, amounting to N500,000 each. Additionally, ships and naval establishments in Lagos have been directed to pay a monthly levy and subscriptions for their staff to use the club’s facilities. These measures have already begun to improve the club’s financial situation.
Admiral Hassan emphasized the importance of members paying their dues to support the club’s growth, noting that many members have been lax in keeping up with their subscriptions. He also highlighted the need to amend the club’s constitution to allow lower-ranking officers to hold the position of club commodore, in order to ensure a more balanced leadership structure.
The FOC expressed his commitment to upgrading the club’s standards and promoting water sports in Nigeria. He encouraged the club to lower the cost of sponsorship to attract more support for boat races and other events. Admiral Hassan also praised the athletes for their sportsmanship and highlighted the potential for young talents in swimming and kayaking to join the Nigerian Navy and further develop their skills.
Overall, the Nigerian Navy Sailing Club is on a positive trajectory towards growth and improvement, with Admiral Hassan leading the way towards a brighter future for water sports in the country.
