Michigan Sailing Club: A Unique All-Volunteer Club on Baseline Lake
The Michigan Sailing Club: A Unique Gem on Baseline Lake
Nestled on the shores of Baseline Lake lies a hidden gem for sailing enthusiasts and novices alike – the Michigan Sailing Club. This all-volunteer cooperative club offers a wide range of activities, from leisurely day-sailing to competitive racing, windsurfing, paddle-craft, swimming, and fishing. It is a place where members can come together to enjoy the pleasures of small-boat sailing and foster a sense of community.
Founded in 1938 by a group of Naval Architecture students from the University of Michigan, the club has a rich history that has evolved over the years. Originally located on Whitmore Lake, the club moved to its current location on Baseline Lake in 1953. Today, it serves as the home base for the University of Michigan Sailing Team, with team members also being members of the Michigan Sailing Club.
What sets this club apart is its all-volunteer nature, which helps keep membership dues and costs low. Members have access to a fleet of boats owned by the club, eliminating the need to own a boat. The club also offers sailing lessons for members of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced sailors.
Jeff Kaloustian, the Commodore of the Michigan Sailing Club, has been involved with the club since 2001 and is passionate about promoting the sport of sailing. Under his leadership, the club continues to thrive, offering a range of social sailing activities and programs for members to enjoy.
For those interested in joining the Michigan Sailing Club, the club will be hosting open house events on April 27th and 28th. Prospective members can visit the club, meet current members, and learn more about the benefits of joining this unique sailing community.
Whether you are a seasoned sailor or a novice looking to learn, the Michigan Sailing Club offers something for everyone. Come sail away on Baseline Lake and experience the joy of sailing with like-minded individuals.
