EMU Professor Derrick Fries Nominated for Michigan Sports Hall of Fame
Derrick Fries, a professor at Eastern Michigan University, has been nominated for the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame Ballot for his outstanding achievements in sailing and triathlons. Fries, who has been passionate about sailing since the age of four, has competed in numerous athletic events and championships, earning national titles in both sailing and triathlons.
Despite his age of 70, Fries continues to push himself to new limits, completing 16 athletic events in the summer of 2023. His dedication to the sport has not only earned him recognition from fellow sailors but also from the Les Cheneaux Yacht Club, who nominated him for the prestigious Hall of Fame ballot.
In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Fries has also made significant contributions to sailing education. As a US sailing master instructor trainer for over two decades, he has certified hundreds of instructors and authored influential sailing textbooks, including the widely popular “Start Sailing Right.” Fries’ efforts to promote inclusivity in the sport have been recognized, as he was the first to feature a women helmsperson and people of color in his textbook.
Fries’ impact extends beyond the sailing community, as he spent 31 years in the K-12 education system before joining Eastern Michigan University in 2006. His dedication to teaching and promoting diversity in sports has earned him numerous accolades, including being a NASA Teacher in Space finalist and an inductee into the International Sailing World Hall of Fame.
The public has the opportunity to vote for Fries until April 30, with the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame planning to announce the honorees in late spring and host an induction ceremony in early fall. Fries’ nomination is a testament to his exceptional talent and dedication to both athletics and education.
