EMU Professor Derrick Fries Nominated for Michigan Sports Hall of Fame Ballot

Eastern Michigan University professor Derrick Fries is not your average athlete. With a lifelong passion for sailing and triathlons, Fries has dedicated nearly three decades to competing in athletic events around the world. Now, his exceptional talent is being recognized as he is nominated for the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame Ballot.

Fries, who is a professor in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders at EMU, expressed his excitement at being acknowledged by the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame. He has participated in 16 athletic events in the summer of 2023 alone, showcasing his endurance and dedication to his sports at the age of 70.

Having won numerous national and world titles in sailing and triathlons, Fries is no stranger to success in the athletic world. His passion for sailing has not only led him to championships but also to a career as a sailing master instructor trainer and author of popular sailing textbooks.

Fries’ commitment to inclusivity in the sport of sailing is evident in his efforts to feature women and people of color in his textbooks. He has been a trailblazer in promoting diversity in sailing education, inventing innovative teaching techniques that are still used today in instructor certification programs.

With a long history of teaching and leadership in the K-12 system, Fries’ contributions to the world of sailing education are vast. His nomination for the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame is a testament to his dedication to his sports and his impact on the sailing community.

The public has the opportunity to vote for Fries until April 30, with the honorees set to be announced in late spring and an induction ceremony planned for early fall. Fries’ legacy in the world of sports is sure to be celebrated as he continues to inspire athletes of all backgrounds.
