Clean Water Sports Alliance: Uniting for Clean Open Water Across the UK
Seven national governing bodies of water-based sports in the UK have united to form the Clean Water Sports Alliance, a powerful coalition advocating for clean open water across the country. The Angling Trust, British Rowing, British Triathlon, GB Outrigger, Paddle UK, Royal Yachting Association, and Swim England are joining forces to protect their members and the environment in which they participate.
With nearly 450,000 members, elite athletes, and recreational users relying on UK waters for sport and recreation, the Alliance is calling for the restoration of clean and pollution-free blue spaces. They aim to improve water quality, protect wildlife habitats, and ensure safe participation in water-based activities.
Pollution from various sources has contaminated UK waters, harming ecosystems and posing health risks to those engaging in water sports. Events and activities have been cancelled due to water quality issues, highlighting the urgent need for action.
The Alliance has outlined three key priorities: tackling pollution, improving water health by 2030, and providing real-time water quality information for informed decision-making. They are urging regulators to monitor and hold polluters accountable, ensure access to water quality data, and recognize the diverse range of water-based activities in government policy.
By advocating for cleaner waters and sustainable practices, the Clean Water Sports Alliance is leading the way in protecting the environment and promoting safe and enjoyable water sports for all. Their collaborative efforts are driving positive change and setting a new standard for water stewardship in the UK.
