Campbell Patton remains in contention for Olympic qualification at Last Chance Regatta in France
Bermuda Sailor Campbell Patton Shines at Last Chance Regatta in France
Bermudian sailor Campbell Patton showcased his skills in the windy conditions at the Last Chance Regatta in France, putting himself in a strong position to secure a spot for Bermuda at the upcoming Olympics in Paris. Patton’s consistent form in the strong winds helped him finish seventeenth and tenth in the 61-boat fleet, keeping him in fourth place with three races left in the qualifying series.
Despite facing challenges on the run to the bottom mark, which cost him some ground, Patton was able to work his way back towards the front of the fleet and remain within striking distance of his goal. His performance in the challenging conditions impressed both himself and his coach, as he continues to fight among some of the top sailors in the world.
Joining Patton at the event are Sebastian Kempe and Benn Smith, who are also flying the island’s flag. Kempe and Smith are determined to support Patton in his quest to secure Bermuda’s spot at the Olympics, with Kempe acknowledging that there is still plenty of racing left to go.
Currently, Korean sailor Jeemin Ha leads the standings, with Patton sitting in fourth place, just 16 points behind the leader. The top ten sailors at the end of the qualifying series will advance to the medal race, where points will be doubled. The top three nations in the medal race yet to qualify will secure Olympic spots, with the fourth spot going to the top sailor from the emerging nation programme.
Patton and his fellow Bermudian sailors are focused on putting in their best performances in the remaining races to secure their spots at the Olympics and make their country proud. The competition is fierce, but Patton’s determination and skill have put him in a promising position as he continues to chase his Olympic dream.
