Tanjong Katong Girls’ School Sailor Ashlea Tham Surprises Herself with Gold at National School Games

Tanjong Katong Girls’ School sailor Ashlea Tham shocked herself and her competitors as she clinched the gold in the C Division girls’ ILCA 4 event at the National School Games. Despite being new to the ILCA 4 class, the Secondary 1 student displayed exceptional skill and determination, winning three out of her four races and finishing with a nett score of three points.

The 13-year-old admitted that she did not have high expectations going into the competition, as she was still adjusting to the faster ILCA 4 after sailing in the Optimist class for many years. However, with the support of her coaches and siblings, who are also sailors, Ashlea was able to make a smooth transition and excel in her races.

Ashlea’s success was not the only highlight of the regatta, as Raffles Institution’s Ian Goh also impressed in the B Division ILCA 4 event, securing the title with eight nett points. With his elder brother, national sailor Isaac Goh, cheering him on, Ian showcased resilience and determination, bouncing back from a fourth-place position on the first day to claim victory.

In the A Division girls’ ILCA 6 event, Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) sailor Sarah Seow overcame self-doubt to emerge victorious. The 17-year-old, who only started sailing two years ago, credited her increased self-belief for her success, especially during challenging moments in the competition.

Overall, the National School Games showcased not only the talent and skill of young sailors like Ashlea, Ian, and Sarah but also the importance of support and camaraderie in the sport. As competitors pushed themselves to their limits, they also found joy in working together and fostering a friendly environment on the water.
