America Trophy Marks the End of Sailing Season

Washington College Sailing Team Finishes 17th at America Trophy – MAISA Open Dinghy Championship

The Washington College sailing team wrapped up their 2023-24 season at the America Trophy – MAISA Open Dinghy Championship this past weekend, facing tough competition on the East River and finishing 17th out of 18 teams. Hosted by SUNY Maritime, the regatta provided a challenging test for the sailors.

In the A Division, Washington College struggled, finishing 18th with 245 points. The team was led by freshman Patrick Tis and junior Joseph Bonacci, with freshman Nora Ciak serving as crew. Despite their efforts, Georgetown claimed victory in the A Division with 66 points, narrowly edging out St. Mary’s (Md.) with 68 points.

The B Division saw Shore Sailing, skippered by senior Kennedy Jones, also facing tough competition. With freshmen Rachel Morgen and senior Laurel Krause as crew, the team finished 17th overall with 205 points. Georgetown once again emerged victorious in the B Division with 86 points.

Overall, Georgetown dominated the regatta, finishing with 149 points and securing first place, while St. Mary’s (Md.) Maritime followed closely behind with 154 points. Washington College finished with a total of 450 points for the weekend.

Despite the challenging conditions, the team persevered through light and shifty breezes on Saturday and steadier winds on Sunday. The seniors on the team, including Jones, Krause, Matt Collinson, and Connor Cooper, showcased their leadership and determination throughout the season.

As the season comes to a close, the Washington College sailing team can reflect on their hard work and dedication, looking ahead to future opportunities to improve and succeed in the competitive sailing world.
