World Rugby Investigating Allegations of Homophobia Against Fiji Rugby Union Chairman
World Rugby is currently investigating allegations of homophobia against Francis Kean, the chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), as reported by the Sunday Times. The paper claimed to have heard a recording of Kean using homophobic language while he was in charge of the Fiji prison service.
In response to these allegations, World Rugby released a statement expressing their serious concern. The global governing body emphasized that rugby is a sport founded on strong and inclusive values and does not tolerate any form of abusive or discriminatory behavior.
The timing of these allegations is particularly significant as Sir Bill Beaumont is standing for re-election as World Rugby chairman. Beaumont, who is currently the incumbent, has received endorsements from various rugby organizations, including the FRU, in his bid for re-election.
However, Kean’s involvement in the election process has come under scrutiny due to the allegations against him. Despite his efforts to secure a seat on the World Rugby Executive Committee, there is mounting pressure for him to withdraw from the race.
Kean, who has a controversial past including a conviction for manslaughter in 2007, currently represents Fiji on the World Rugby council. World Rugby clarified that council seats are awarded to unions rather than individuals, with Fiji meeting the necessary criteria for representation.
As the investigation unfolds, the future of Kean’s involvement in World Rugby governance remains uncertain. The upcoming elections for the position of World Rugby chairman between Beaumont and Agustin Pichot are now overshadowed by the controversy surrounding Kean and the FRU.
