Saracens boss calls for resolution to contract limbo for top players
Saracens boss Mark McCall is feeling the pressure as star players Jamie George and Maro Itoje are yet to sign contracts under the new Professional Game Partnership between the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and Premiership clubs. The new model includes ‘hybrid contracts’ for leading England internationals, with the RFU paying an annual fee of around £150,000 to the player, and the club making up the rest.
McCall emphasized the importance of resolving the contract limbo quickly, stating, “The sooner all that gets done, the better for everybody.” While George and Itoje have agreed to deals in principle, the lack of signed contracts is causing concern for Saracens as they plan for the upcoming season. McCall acknowledged that any further delay could potentially disrupt recruitment efforts.
In the midst of contract negotiations, Saracens are also facing injury setbacks, with centre Olly Hartley potentially facing a significant period on the sidelines due to a knee injury. However, there is some positive news as England centre Alex Lozowski is nearing a return after a long-term injury absence.
The RFU spokesperson reassured that the new Professional Game Partnership, which includes enhanced Elite Player Squad deals, will come into effect next season, with announcements expected in the Autumn. Despite the uncertainty surrounding player contracts, McCall remains hopeful that the situation will be resolved promptly to avoid any disruptions to Saracens’ plans for the future.
