Saracens’ Owen Farrell Seeks Kicking Advice from Jonny Wilkinson Ahead of Premiership Run-In
As Saracens gear up for the Gallagher Premiership run-in, star fly-half Owen Farrell has been seeking private coaching sessions with England legend Jonny Wilkinson to fine-tune his kicking game.
The Independent has learned that Farrell and Wilkinson, who have a close friendship, have been working together at England’s training center at Pennyhill Park in recent weeks. Wilkinson, a former World Cup winner, has been utilized as a kicking consultant by England coaches in the past and has been helping Farrell as he prepares for his move to Racing 92 at the end of the season.
Farrell, who recently surpassed Wilkinson as England’s leading international points scorer, has turned to the legendary kicker for guidance during times of struggle in the past. The sessions are said to be informal, but Farrell values Wilkinson’s expertise and perspective on the mental aspect of kicking.
Wilkinson, who famously kicked England to World Cup glory in 2003, has continued to practice kicking daily as a form of “spiritual practice” even after retiring from rugby. His influence on Farrell could prove crucial as Saracens battle for a top-four finish in the Premiership.
Farrell will lead Saracens against Bath on Friday night in a crucial match for both teams’ playoff hopes. With only three regular-season games remaining, every point is vital in the tight race for a playoff spot. As Farrell looks to fine-tune his kicking under Wilkinson’s guidance, Saracens will be hoping for a strong performance to secure their place in the postseason.
