Ospreys’ Success in South Africa Puts Them in Play-off Contention – April 21, 2024
Ospreys Boost Play-Off Hopes with Victory in South Africa
Ospreys head coach Toby Booth is confident that his team has put themselves in a strong position to secure a United Rugby Championship (URC) play-off spot after a thrilling 27-21 bonus-point victory over Stormers in Cape Town.
With only three points separating teams from fifth to 11th in the URC table, Ospreys currently sit in seventh place and are determined to secure their place in the top eight for the play-offs in June.
Booth emphasized the importance of treating every game as a cup final from now on, as Ospreys face tough upcoming matches against Bulls, Leinster, Dragons, and Cardiff.
The victory over Stormers marked a significant milestone for Welsh sides, as it was the first away league win by a Welsh team this season against non-Welsh opposition. It was also Ospreys’ second triumph in South Africa this season, following their success against Lions in January.
Wing Luke Morgan shone with two tries against Stormers, while Sam Parry and Harri Deaves also made valuable contributions. The victory was built on a solid defensive display and standout performances from key players like Morgan Morris, Huw Sutton, and James Ratti.
Despite missing several key players due to injury and suspension, Booth remains optimistic about the team’s prospects moving forward. He praised the resilience and determination of his squad, especially after the disappointment of their European Challenge Cup quarter-final exit.
As Ospreys gear up to face the Bulls next, Booth is hopeful that the return of some key players will bolster their chances of securing another crucial victory. With four wins against South African sides this season, Ospreys will be looking to complete a clean sweep with a win over the Bulls in Pretoria.
