Souths Unearth Townsville’s Future Foley Shield Hooker: A Rugby Union Convert Making Waves
Souths Bulls may have found a diamond in the rough in the form of Declan Marchioni, a former rugby union star from Burdekin who has made a seamless transition to rugby league. The talented halfback-turned-hooker has impressed coaches with his toughness and skill, earning high praise from Bulls coach Mitch Grimes.
Grimes, a Foley Shield veteran himself, believes Marchioni has what it takes to excel in the representative arena. “I definitely think he’d be in line for that,” Grimes said. “He fits the calibre of player for Foley Shield with his toughness and skill-wise.”
Marchioni’s journey to rugby league was unexpected, but his impact has been undeniable. Despite coming from a union background, he has quickly adapted to the demands of the 13-man code, showcasing his defensive prowess and physicality in the middle of the field.
“My co-coach Andy absolutely loves him. He’s been playing outstanding, nice and tough in the middle,” Grimes said. “He struggled a little bit with our structure, obviously being from union, but every week he just seems to be getting bigger and the one thing that gets him through is that mental toughness.”
Marchioni’s rise has been a pleasant surprise for the Bulls, who are excited to see how far the young hooker can go in the sport. With his tenacity and work ethic, Marchioni has quickly become a key player for Souths, earning a starting spot in the team’s lineup.
As the Bulls prepare to take on Norths in round 3 of Rugby League Townsville and District, all eyes will be on Marchioni as he looks to continue his impressive start to the season. If he can maintain his current form, there’s no doubt that he will be a force to be reckoned with in the Foley Shield and beyond.
