Howden Celebrates Grassroots Rugby with Lions Origins Clubs Event at Oxford University Rugby Club

Oxford Harlequins players had the opportunity to learn from the best as they took part in coaching sessions led by former British & Irish Lions player Jason Robinson. The event, organized by Howden as part of their Big Rugby Day Out at Oxford University Rugby Club, aimed to celebrate grassroots rugby and recognize the clubs that have helped produce Lions players.

The event saw players from Oxford Harlequins and other Lions Origins Clubs come together for a day of rugby-based activities and coaching sessions. Craig Haller, a coach at Oxford Harlequins, expressed the importance of events like these in inspiring young players to follow their dreams in rugby.

The day also marked the beginning of Howden’s principal partnership with the British & Irish Lions, ahead of the 2025 tour to Australia and the inaugural women’s tour to New Zealand in 2027. Seven Lions Origins Clubs were in attendance to kick off Howden’s celebration of grassroots rugby.

Gavin Hastings, a Howden ambassador and former Lion, emphasized the significance of recognizing the community clubs that play a vital role in developing rugby talent. Howden’s Head of global sponsorships, Giles Morgan, highlighted the company’s commitment to both elite and community rugby, stating their desire to support and celebrate the rugby community across England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland.

As the principal sponsor of the British & Irish Lions, Howden will play a prominent role in the upcoming tours and will continue to support grassroots rugby as part of their partnership with the Lions. The event was a testament to the importance of community clubs in nurturing future rugby stars and the strong bond that exists within the rugby family.
