Billy Vunipola Opens Up About Drunken Arrest in Majorca and Saracens’ Response
Billy Vunipola, the England No 8, has found himself in hot water after a drunken arrest in Majorca. The 31-year-old was fined €240 for resisting the law after refusing to leave a bar in Palma in the early hours of Sunday morning. Vunipola, who was tasered twice by Spanish police, has issued a public apology for his behavior.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Vunipola admitted that he struggles with knowing when to stop drinking, which is why he had abstained since August 2022. He explained that he had decided to have a drink on his final team-bonding trip with Saracens before his departure from the club this summer. However, things got out of hand, leading to his arrest.
Despite the incident, Vunipola expressed gratitude for the support he has received from Saracens over the years. He denied any threatening behavior towards other bar-goers and explained that the injury to a police officer occurred accidentally during his arrest.
Video footage of the incident shows Vunipola being tasered twice, with the 20-stone forward joking that his muscle mass may have lessened the impact of the tasers. Saracens have stated that they will handle the matter internally, but Vunipola could still face a misconduct charge from the Rugby Football Union.
With two games left in the Gallagher English Premiership regular season, Saracens will be looking to put this incident behind them as they focus on their upcoming matches and the playoffs. Vunipola’s behavior will undoubtedly be a topic of discussion as the team navigates the rest of the season.
