Billy Vunipola Opens Up About Drunken Arrest in Majorca and Saracens’ Response
Saracens’ Billy Vunipola has found himself in hot water after a drunken arrest in Majorca, leading to a public apology and a fine of €240. The England No 8 admitted to having a problem “knowing when to stop” when it comes to drinking, which resulted in the incident at a bar in Palma.
Vunipola, who was tasered twice by Spanish police, explained that he had been drinking for the first time since August 2022 as he anticipated it would be his final team-bonding trip with Saracens before his departure from the club this summer. Despite his intentions to enjoy the occasion, things got out of hand.
The 31-year-old acknowledged his tendency to go overboard when drinking, stating that he struggles to know when to stop. He expressed regret for his actions and emphasized that he does not remember being asked to leave the bar before the police were called.
Despite the incident, Vunipola remains grateful for the support of his teammates and Saracens, who have issued a warning to him over his behavior. The Rugby Football Union may also take further action with a misconduct charge looming.
As Saracens continue their Gallagher English Premiership campaign, Vunipola’s off-field behavior has certainly caused a stir. With two games left in the regular season, the team will be looking to focus on their on-field performance as they aim for success in the upcoming play-offs.
