Alex Walmsley Provides Update on Return from Hamstring Injury and Reflects on Career Journey
St Helens prop Alex Walmsley is facing uncertainty over his return to action as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. The 34-year-old has been sidelined for the team’s last two matches, with his last appearance dating back to April 14 against Warrington Wolves in the Challenge Cup.
Speaking on The Bench Podcast, Walmsley expressed his frustration at the lack of clarity surrounding his injury timeline. He mentioned that further tests are needed to determine when he can make a comeback to the field.
Despite the setback, Walmsley recently signed a contract extension with St Helens, committing to the club until the end of the 2026 Super League season. The veteran forward has been a key player for the team, making 280 appearances and scoring 52 tries during his time with the club.
Reflecting on his unconventional rugby journey, Walmsley revealed that he took a different path to professional rugby, having stopped playing the sport at 16 before rediscovering his passion for it at a later age. He emphasized his pride in his career and the fond memories he holds from his time playing amateur rugby.
Despite receiving offers to move to the NRL in the past, Walmsley has always been content with his decision to stay at St Helens. He highlighted the importance of happiness in his career choices and credited the success and camaraderie he has experienced with the club.
As Walmsley awaits further tests to determine his return to action, St Helens fans will be hoping for a speedy recovery for the influential prop as they look to maintain their strong form in the Super League.
