Former Rugby League International Terry Hill Remembered as One of the Game’s “Most Popular Characters”

Former rugby league international Terry Hill, who passed away at the age of 52, is being remembered as one of the game’s “most popular characters”. Hill, who suffered an apparent heart attack while in the Philippines, had a successful career spanning from 1990 to 2005, playing for various clubs including South Sydney, Manly, and Wests Tigers.

Hill’s impact on the game extended beyond the field, as he was also known for his appearances on Channel Nine’s The Footy Show and in commercials for Lowes menswear. Australian Rugby League Commission Chairman Peter V’landys praised Hill as a “prodigiously talented footballer” and a “giant personality” who was loved by all who knew him.

Manly Sea Eagles, one of Hill’s former clubs, announced that players will wear black armbands during their game against Parramatta to honor Hill’s memory. The club’s CEO Tony Mestrov described Hill as a “much loved and respected figure” in rugby league, and extended condolences to his family and friends.

Hill’s impact at Manly was particularly significant, as he played more than half of his first grade games for the club and was part of the 1996 premiership-winning side. Former teammate Geoff Toovey remembered Hill as a great player and a good friend, offering his sincere condolences to Hill’s family.

The rugby league community is mourning the loss of Terry Hill, a talented player and beloved personality who left a lasting legacy both on and off the field. He will be fondly remembered by fans, teammates, and friends alike.
