Ryan Catholic College Dominates Southern Cross in Blackhawks Trophy Showdown

In a thrilling showdown between Townsville’s top schoolboy rugby league teams, Ryan Catholic College emerged victorious over their cross-town rivals Southern Cross, solidifying their position at the top of the Blackhawks Trophy standings.

The day started with high emotions as both schools battled it out in the under-13s and under-15s divisions, with Southern Cross narrowly taking the under-13s match and Ryan claiming victory in the under-15s. The stage was set for an intense clash between the two schools.

Southern Cross faced early setbacks with the loss of forward leader Sebastian Richards to injury and found themselves trailing 10-0 within the first eight minutes of the game. Ryan Catholic College displayed exceptional defensive prowess, thwarting Southern Cross’s attacking efforts and capitalizing on their own opportunities to extend their lead.

Coach Annan Whittington’s halftime pep talk proved crucial as Ryan maintained their composure and intensity in the second half. Junior Cowboys Academy members Brad Pilchowski and Aston Smith shone on the field, breaking the game open and securing a convincing 30-0 win for Ryan.

Aston Smith was named the ANZAC Medalist for Player of the Match, showcasing his exceptional performance on the field. Despite the loss, Southern Cross’s hooker Jai Sturgess was recognized as their top player for his efforts in the match.

In another exciting match-up, All Souls St Gabriel’s School triumphed over Blackheath Thornburgh College in a physical and passionate battle. Forward trio Hunter McKellar, Gilbert Bethel, and Mickey Luke led All Souls to a hard-fought 16-10 victory, with Bethel scoring a remarkable solo try.

Both matches showcased the talent and determination of Townsville’s schoolboy rugby league teams, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead. Fans can look forward to more thrilling action as the competition heats up in the Blackhawks Trophy standings.
