Mal Meninga Addresses Reports of Potential Interim Coaching Role at South Sydney Rabbitohs

Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga has found himself at the center of speculation as reports emerge that he could be approached to take on the role of interim coach for the South Sydney Rabbitohs. With current coach Jason Demetriou facing pressure after a string of disappointing performances, Meninga has emerged as the top target for the Rabbitohs’ board.

According to Fox League’s James Hooper, Meninga has been chosen over other candidates such as Michael Maguire and Souths assistant Ben Hornby. While Maguire has reportedly ruled himself out of contention to focus on his role as the NSW State of Origin coach, Meninga has expressed his willingness to step in as a caretaker coach if needed.

In an interview with SEN, Meninga confirmed that there has been interest from the Rabbitohs but no official talks have taken place yet. He acknowledged the tough position Demetriou finds himself in and emphasized the need for fairness in any decision-making process.

Despite the flattering prospect of coaching the Rabbitohs on an interim basis, Meninga highlighted the challenges he faces with his current commitments in media, the Australian national team, and his personal business. However, he remains open to the opportunity and appreciates the recognition his name has received in connection to the role.

As the speculation continues to swirl around Demetriou’s future at South Sydney, Meninga called for transparency and fairness in handling the situation. Whether or not he ultimately takes on the role, Meninga’s willingness to step in as interim coach demonstrates his commitment to the game and his desire to help out a struggling team in need.
