Rugby League Legend Keith Barnes Remembered as One of the Greatest Players

Balmain Tigers legend Keith Barnes, who passed away at the age of 89, has been hailed as one of rugby league’s greatest players. Barnes, a former Australian Test captain, was known for his exceptional skills as a fullback and his remarkable goalkicking ability, earning him the nickname “Golden Boots.”

Inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame in 2007, Barnes represented the Kangaroos in 17 Tests and left a lasting legacy at the Balmain club. He scored 1519 points in 194 games as a player, later serving as a coach and administrator. In 2009, the grandstand at Leichhardt Oval was renamed in his honor to commemorate his contributions to the club.

Wests Tigers CEO Shane Richardson paid tribute to Barnes, describing him as “one of the all-time greats of the game” and a true gentleman and leader. ARL commission chairman Peter V’landys also praised Barnes for his exceptional skills and leadership on and off the field.

Barnes’ impact on the game extended beyond his playing career, as he mentored and guided many players, leaving a lasting impression on the rugby league community. His induction into the NRL Hall of Fame in 2007 was a testament to his significant contributions to the sport.

The rugby league community mourns the loss of a true legend, as Barnes’ legacy will continue to inspire future generations of players. Our deepest condolences go out to Keith Barnes’ family and friends during this difficult time.
