Joey Manu’s Future: Confirmed Departure from Roosters, Where Will He Play in 2025?
Joey Manu’s future in the NRL has been decided, with the Sydney Roosters confirming that the star back will be departing the club at the end of the season. The 27-year-old’s contract with the Roosters runs out at the end of 2024, and despite efforts to retain him, Manu will be moving on to new opportunities in 2025.
The Roosters have confirmed that Manu has signed a deal with Japanese rugby side, Toyota Verblitz. This move will see Manu join former All Blacks coach Steve Hansen at the club, where he will be playing alongside the likes of Beauden Barrett and Aaron Smith.
It had been reported that Manu could command a significantly higher salary in Japan than what the Roosters could offer, with several other big-name stars also vying for lucrative contracts at the Bondi Junction-based club.
In a statement regarding his departure, Manu expressed his gratitude for his time at the Roosters, saying, “I have cherished my time playing rugby league for the Roosters, so it’s been a tough decision to leave the club and NRL.” He also mentioned his excitement for the challenge of playing rugby in Japan, but emphasized his focus on finishing the current season with the Roosters on a high note.
Roosters coach Trent Robinson praised Manu’s professionalism throughout the process, stating, “Joey has been open about his desire to experience the challenge of living overseas with his young family, and of playing in a different environment, so while we are sad to see him go, we fully support him.”
As the Roosters currently sit ninth on the NRL ladder with a 3-3 record, fans will be eager to see Manu give his all in his final season with the club before embarking on his new rugby journey in Japan.
