Rugby League Mourns the Loss of Balmain Legend Keith Barnes
The rugby league world is mourning the loss of a true legend, former Australia captain and NRL Hall of Famer Keith Barnes, who passed away at the age of 89. Known as ‘Golden Boots’ for his exceptional kicking ability and accuracy at goal, Barnes was a revered figure in the sport.
Barnes spent the majority of his career with the Balmain Tigers, playing 194 games for the club between 1955 and 1968. He was part of three grand finals during his time with the Tigers and was considered one of the finest fullbacks of his era. Barnes kicked an impressive 742 goals during his first-grade career and finished with 11 tries and 1519 points for Balmain.
Tributes have been pouring in from across the rugby league community, with Australian Rugby League Commission Chair Peter V’landys praising Barnes’ contributions to the sport. V’landys highlighted Barnes’ leadership qualities and described him as one of the greatest fullbacks the game has ever seen.
In addition to his success on the field, Barnes also made a significant impact off the field, serving as the secretary and CEO of the Balmain Tigers after his playing days. He was a mentor to many players and was highly respected for his integrity and character.
