National Sports Governing Bodies Unite to Fight Water Pollution Threatening UK Water Sports
National sports governing bodies have come together to address the urgent issue of pollution and sewage discharges threatening water sports across the UK. The alliance, consisting of seven organizations representing nearly 450,000 elite athletes and water users, is calling for immediate action to ensure clean open water for all.
The Angling Trust, British Rowing, British Triathlon, GB Outrigger, Paddle UK, Royal Yachting Association, and Swim England have outlined several priorities to combat the crisis. Cameron Taylor, chief executive of GB Outrigger, emphasized the importance of clean water, stating that polluted water is a “death knell” for British sport.
The impact of pollution on water sports was highlighted last month when high levels of E.coli were found in the River Thames, affecting the historic Oxbridge Boat Race. The Clean Water Sports Alliance reported that training sessions and events are being canceled due to water quality concerns.
The alliance is advocating for regulators to be adequately funded to monitor and hold polluters accountable. They are also calling for real-time water quality information, compulsory monitoring of sewage outlets, and a shift in government policy to recognize the importance of clean water for all recreational activities.
Alastair Marks, chief executive of British Rowing, expressed the alliance’s commitment to preserving water quality for future generations. Andy Salmon, Swim England chief executive, emphasized the need to protect blue spaces for the benefit of all water users and wildlife.
The government and water companies have acknowledged the need for action, with measures in place to address sewage pollution and improve water quality. However, the alliance is pushing for faster progress to safeguard human health and the environment.
With the collective efforts of national sports governing bodies, there is hope for a cleaner and safer environment for water sports enthusiasts across the UK. The alliance’s campaign for clean water is a crucial step towards ensuring the sustainability of water-based activities for generations to come.
