“Rowing Together: The Yee Family’s Journey to Fitness and Bonding”
The Yee family proved that the saying “a family that rows together, stays together” holds true as they participated in the inaugural Singapore Indoor Rowing Championships on March 30. The family of six, including parents Yee Kok Pheng and Kee Su Ling, and their four children, all took part in the event, showcasing their unity and love for the sport.
While the Yees did not clinch any individual medals, Kok Pheng managed to secure a silver in the relay event. However, the real victory for the family was the quality time spent together and the opportunity to bond over a shared passion for rowing.
Kok Pheng, who started indoor rowing in 2003 as part of his rehabilitation after an ankle injury, has passed on his love for the sport to his family. With a rowing machine in their Tampines home, the Yees take turns using it, with Kok Pheng closely monitoring their progress even when he is away on business trips.
For Micah, the youngest member of the family, participating in a sports competition with his entire family was a memorable experience that he will always cherish. The Yees’ dedication to rowing not only keeps them fit and healthy but also strengthens their family bond.
In the midst of the Yee family’s heartwarming story, rower Joan Poh emerged as the standout performer at the championships, winning the women’s 2,000m event. Despite missing out on the Paris 2024 Olympics, Poh remains focused on her future goals and aims to make a strong comeback at the 2029 SEA Games in Singapore.
Singapore Rowing president Paul Supramaniam expressed his excitement about the success of the Indoor Championships and hopes to make it an annual event to boost the sport’s popularity and identify new talent. With a growing interest in indoor rowing, the future looks bright for the sport in Singapore.
