West Virginia University Rowing Team Battles Weather at George Washington Invitational
Despite challenging weather conditions, the West Virginia University rowing team showcased their resilience and determination at the George Washington Invitational in Washington, D.C. this past weekend. With only five races out of 16 completed due to the adverse weather, the Mountaineers faced tough competition from schools like Drexel, George Washington, and North Carolina.
The strong winds and rough waters on the Potomac River made racing conditions extremely difficult, with some races being canceled altogether. Despite these obstacles, the WVU rowers put up a valiant effort, with the 2V8+ team delivering an impressive performance, finishing over 10 seconds ahead of their opponents from St. Joe’s.
Coach Jimmy King praised his team for their resilience in the face of challenging conditions, emphasizing the importance of learning from the experience and using it to improve in future races. The Mountaineers will now turn their focus to the upcoming Mason Invite, hoping for better weather and smoother waters.
In the races that were completed, WVU’s 1V8+ and 2V8+ teams faced tough competition from Temple and Old Dominion but managed to secure victories against the latter. The 3V8+ team put up a strong fight against George Washington but ultimately fell short in their sole race of the weekend.
Looking ahead, West Virginia will compete in the George Mason Invitational on April 21, eager to build on their performance at the George Washington Invitational and continue their pursuit of success on the water. Despite the challenges they faced, the Mountaineers remain determined and focused on achieving their goals in the upcoming races.
