SAN DIEGO – The No. 4 Texas Rowing team had a stellar weekend in California, dominating the competition at the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday. The Longhorns secured three grand final victories and finished as runners-up in another, showcasing their strength and skill on the water.
Head coach Dave O’Neill expressed his pride in the team’s performance, stating, “It was a great day here in San Diego. All four crews raced really hard, and I’m really proud of the team. Coming away with three wins is terrific, but we’re keeping things in perspective.”
The Texas rowers started the finals session strong, claiming a convincing victory in the Jessop-Whittier Cup Invitational by the I Eight. The team’s impressive time of 6:23.272 secured them a win over top programs like California and Washington.
The success continued as the Texas Four secured their third-straight title in the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup, dominating the competition with an open-water victory.
In the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy, the Texas II Eight faced early challenges but ultimately pulled ahead to claim another victory for the Longhorns.
The team closed out their weekend with a second-place finish in the Carley Copley Cup in the Open Eight, narrowly missing out on the top spot to California.
Looking ahead, Texas will face off against No. 9 Michigan in their next race, with Coach O’Neill acknowledging the upcoming challenge. “The turnaround for next Saturday’s race in Michigan will be pretty tight, and we’ll definitely be challenged. We need to do what we can to be ready for that race and everything moving forward.”
Overall, the Texas Rowing team’s performance at the San Diego Crew Classic solidified their status as a powerhouse in collegiate rowing. With their sights set on future competitions, the Longhorns are poised for continued success in the season ahead.
