Texas Rowing Sweeps No. 9 Michigan for Second Consecutive Year at Belleville Lake
In a thrilling showdown at Belleville Lake, the No. 2 Texas Rowing team showcased their dominance by sweeping the No. 9 Michigan Wolverines for the second year in a row. Despite challenging racing conditions, the Longhorns powered through to secure victories in all four boat categories.
The morning kicked off with a stellar performance from the First Eight, finishing over five seconds ahead of Michigan with a time of 6:08.10. The crew navigated the fast tailwind in the first half of the race before facing rough waters in the second half, showcasing their resilience and teamwork.
Following suit, the Second Eight and I Four boats secured open water victories, displaying their skill and determination on the water. The Texas II Four completed the sweep with a strong performance, highlighting their ability to come together as a new combination and secure a win.
Head coach Dave O’Neill praised his team’s ability to handle adversity and perform under pressure, noting standout performances from individual rowers such as Lanie Nitsch, Abby Dawson, and Sue Holderness. The Longhorns’ unbeaten streak in the First Eight, Second Eight, and Four boats this season is a testament to their hard work and dedication.
Looking ahead, Texas is gearing up to host the Longhorn Invite on April 27, where they will face tough competition from defending NCAA Champion Stanford, Virginia, and Ohio State. With their eyes set on the ultimate prize, the Longhorns are ready to take on the challenge and continue their winning streak in the weeks to come.
