“Previewing the 2024 Syracuse Men’s Rowing Season: Freshmen to Watch, Key Departures, and Key Matchups”
Syracuse Men’s Rowing Prepares for 2024 Season
Syracuse men’s rowing team is gearing up for another exciting season after a successful run in 2023. The Orange had one of their best seasons, with each crew placing in the top 15 at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship and finishing eighth in the Ten Eyck Trophy standings.
Heading into the 2024 season, there are several key factors to watch out for. One of the highlights is the influx of talented freshmen under the guidance of head coach Dave Reischman, who is entering his 22nd season with the team. Among the 10 freshmen brought in, Beck Honebein and Oles Walo have shown promise after impressive performances in the fall season.
However, the team also had to bid farewell to some key members of their Henley Crew, including Bricen Nygaard, Emory Sammons, Connor Toomey, and Ryan Elsinga. Despite the departures, assistant coach Connor Walters expressed confidence in the younger group and highlighted the potential within the team.
As the Orange look to fill in the gaps left by the departing seniors, they can rely on returning talents such as Mack Carr, Cole Nordby, Declan Fry, and Jack Gorman. Additionally, rowers like Lachlan Doust, Joe Willis, and Sean McHugh, who represented their countries in summer expeditions, bring valuable experience to the team.
The upcoming spring season will feature key matchups against top teams in the country, including Pac-12 opponents Oregon State, Stanford, and California. Syracuse’s goal is to have every boat in the A final at the IRA National Championship, but they will face tough competition along the way.
With a mix of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers, Syracuse men’s rowing team is poised for another successful season. Fans can look forward to thrilling races and exciting performances as the Orange aim to build on their achievements from the previous year.
